The first time I tried Pilates, it kinda pissed me off. Unlike the heaviness of weight training that I'm used to, Pilates creates a very targeted almost annoying twitch of in your muscles. You feel everything in a tingly way that you don't expect a workout to feel.
However, 20 mins in and I was sold. It looks easy, but don't mistake it's low-impact nature for low results, the moves are very precise, controlled and effective. Although I don't practice often, I now confidently stand with the millions of people who claim Pilates can help you lose weight, get relief from back pain, tone your trouble spots, or recover from injury.

What is Define Body?
DEFINE body & mind is a health & wellness brand from the USA whose mission is to educate clients on how to be their absolute best. At our Dubai location, we offer DEFINE's signature fitness classes to provide a balanced, complete fitness routine: DEFINE body (a mix of Pilates, barre, & strengthening exercises), DEFINE revolution (rhythmic, dynamic indoor cycling), and DEFINE mind (aerial yoga-inspired, restorative class).
How did you come up with the idea for Define Body?
Our investors and I noticed a need for high-quality fitness in Dubai. We knew the Founder of DEFINE in the USA (Henry Richardson) and he and DEFINE's Co-Owner were excited about taking their successful concept abroad. It's incredibly inspiring that the concept for DEFINE body & mind was born from his love of low impact workouts after suffering from severe injuries. His passion for teaching balanced, sustainable workouts led him to develop his signature DEFINE method classes: body, revolution, and mind.
How does Define Body's vibe as a studio differ from other studio cultures?
At DEFINE, we try to be 100% client-focused. Our mission is to educate our clients about how to become their absolute best. This mission affects the types of classes we offer, it affects the movements our instructors choose to teach during class, it affects the words they use to educate & inspire, and it even affects what products we decide to sell in the studio and place in our restrooms! From client feedback, we've been told that people really feel this authenticity and care, which has had an amazing impact on the daily vibe we feel in the studio.
What’s one thing you wish more people knew about Define Body?
In general, I wish more people knew about the benefits of low-impact, sustainable workouts. Our daily routines and lifestyle affects what our bodies will be able to handle in the long-term. People need to be careful that the fitness activities they're engaging in on a daily basis are ones that protect and sustain their bodies, allowing them to workout for decades to come! It is amazing to see clients in their 70s and 80s at our USA locations! DEFINE offers 3 balanced, low-impact workouts. The combination of cardio from DEFINE rev, the strength-training from DEFINE body, and restoration/lengthening exercises from DEFINE mind offer a balanced, sustainable approach to fitness that you can do for years and years to come.
What would you say to a beginner who might be intimidated to take a class?
Our instructors are trained to tier-teach, meaning they offer options for everyone in the class, no matter what level you're starting from! Our classes are open to all levels, and breaks are encouraged whenever you need to take one! Listen to your body, and speak to the instructor before class to let her know you're new to the class. If you have any concerns that they need to be aware of, such as injuries, the instructor will keep you in mind throughout the class and let you know how to modify the movement based on your injury or condition.
Can you explain the balance of mind and body for holistic wellbeing?
We believe that physical strength, length and balance of our bodies impact both states of mind and being. If we do not take care of our bodies, our mental health and state starts to suffer. If we don't take care of our thoughts, emotions, or stress levels (what's going on in our minds), we feel the consequences in our bodies, such as in the form of headaches, stomach problems, ulcers, etc. The mind and body are intimately connected, and attention to both is essential for holistic wellbeing.
What’s on your playlist right now?
Since I teach our mind (aerial-yoga inspired, restorative class), I have a really relaxing but upbeat playlist that has Thievery Corporation, Coldplay, and Imogen Heap on it! I've just looked at one of our lead instructors DEFINE revolution (cycling) playlists, though, and one of them has an eclectic mix of The Chainsmokers, Beyonce, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Daft Punk on it, among other well-known, upbeat songs!
